One of the absolutely most fascinating topics to me is human communication with unknown intelligence – and not even because of the potential alien receivers, but because of what it says about ourselves, and the challenges faced in its design.
What do we as a species want to communicate? How can we sum up the essentials of all human knowledge and culture in a few images? What language, visual or otherwise, can we come up with to communicate with an audience we know absolutely nothing about? It's information design stripped to its core.
Pictured above is the Interstellar Rosetta Stone, but see also the beautiful Voyager Golden Record, the Pioneer Plaque and the Arecibo message.
